Introduction

Xtreme Modelling is a series of periodic 'magazines' produced in Spain, and now translated and published in English. More properly a book rather than a magazine, Xtreme modelling now also produce various titles in other series aimed at the armour modeller

The book

It's an odd one this, since it's ostensibly a periodic magazine, and yet in format, and indeed content, it's more like a book. It begins with an in-depth article by Mario Eens on his build of the AFV Club Sd.Kfz.11, although as this is part two, this only covers the painting of the model. It's an extremely detailed article though, Mario even presenting us with a detailed chart of which paint he used for each item within the build.

Marion Eens makes his second contribution with his build article of a Tamiya 1/35th DKW NZ 350 German motorcycle. He's used this item as a load for the cargo bed of the Sd.Kfz 11....never hurts to grab that extra bit of mileage! It's not an especially long article, but very readable if you know what I mean? Mario has added the Aber detail set to the bike, and offers some really helpful tips along the way, finishing with his painting of the motorcycle.

How many of actually bought one of the Karl Moser kits a few years ago? I'll bet a good many of you still have it un-built in your stash! I actually built mine....but was never really very happy with the way it looked, and consequently it's hidden away in a container in my garage! Sergi Mira has finished his though, and presents it here in six pages of photographs. There's extended text with the article, one section even being called 'Assembly', although we're not offered a single photograph of the model during assembly...just finished shots? Nicely finished though, and it certainly will give me some ideas if I ever get around to pulling the one out of the garage and giving it another go!

Towards the centre of the book we are offered the 'main' feature. A vignette entitled 'Murderous Mist'. This is the cover photograph and consists of a Jagdpanzer on a sloping base with groundwork, along the side of which stand three nervous looking US troops. The builder Mattias Larsson, gives us his entire thinking behind the project, beginning with the real historical background against which his envisaged scene is set. It's superb build, and worth the purchase price almost just for this one article.

Luciano Rodriguez displays a diorama involving a Universal Carrier and figures around a dummy Bofors gun emplacement. I've actually seen this before on another website, I suppose that's one drawback about all the different media today, in that you can never be quite sure if something you're thinking of buying in a book or magazine hasn't already been published elsewhere in some other form.

The last twenty-three pages consist of some great photographs from the AMT Torrent 2008 show held just outside Valencia in Spain back in March. This is a photo report and includes no text, not even captions, but as said there are some great photo's!

Conclusion

Although somewhat more expensive than your average magazine, it is somewhat larger too. It's perfect bound and is printed on high quality paper, giving it the look and feel of a soft cover book. The real test is whether or not it goes on to the top of the stack of the magazines in my garage, or did I without thinking reach behind me and put it on my bookshelf. I can reach it from where I'm sitting...recommended and well worth the money.
